Is it a pen? Is it a stylus?

HexStyli 6 in 1 Stylus Pen

Christmas is fast approaching and if you’re looking for something a little quirky for the geek in your life, maybe a stocking filler, then I might have just the thing for you.

I’d love to go paperless, I even bought a scanner with a document feeder to help me on my way, but I still scribble a lot of notes. I’m yet to find an app that is as easy to use as pen and paper; PenUltimate on the iPad is pretty close, but only with a decent stylus.

I still carry a pen around, you can write on anything (not something a stylus can do) but I don’t like carrying both. I love multi-purpose things, I love it when an object surprises you, enter stage left the HexStyli 6 in 1 Stylus Pen.

This one package has a lot to offer for an object you carry around with you a lot, in my case in my pocket. Let’s start with the fundamentals; you’ve got a really good quality refillable ballpoint pen at one end and a stylus that works really well. What’s more, for extended use you can unscrew the stylus and put it in place of the ballpoint, that way you can make use of the excellent etched grip and the lovely weight of the pen.

Unscrewing the stylus from the top reveals one of the secrets of this pen, a pair of philips and flat-head screwdrivers, as with the rest of the pen they are solid and work really well.

Pen Stylus - expandedThe other goodies are a 3 inch and a 7 cm ruler (possible thanks to the hexagonal body of the pen) and a spirit level.

It sounds a bit gimicky, but in less than a week of testing the pen I’ve managed to use everything bar the spirit level, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I find a use for that soon enough.

I found myself the other day with a cracker hat on my head fixing a cracker toy with the screwdriver and I couldn’t help but think to myself how much like a christmas present the pen felt. I’d be happy to have it on my pile of christmas presents. To make it better it also comes in a very wrap-able presentation box.

One last thing to reiterate, the pen has a lovely weight and works really well; the stylus is one of the best I’ve used, it works well on every device I’ve tried it on, even with screen protectors, which I’ve sometimes found to make other styluses sticky.

If you’re looking for a gift, get in there quick for delivery before christmas! Mobile Fun, who kindly provided this pen for review, also do a full range of styluses from the basic to artist level.

What are some other great stocking fillers you’ve found this year?
