Bill Bailey's Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra (DVD)

I think Bill Bailey is the perfect geek comedian. No, seriously, he’s into techie musical instruments, sci-fi, and is very, very funny. Earlier this year he put on a show called The Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra in which he explored what orchestras were all about and brought us his usual brand of musical comedy, and it’s finally coming out on DVD!

So you’re settling down to watch it… what can you expect? Well, Bill is accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra as he talks us through the various instruments and what they’re used for, interspersed with some of his own songs, standup comedy, and brilliant observations. If you think Eastenders could do with some extra drama, you’ll want to see what happens when a typical scene gets an orchestral backing. My particular favourite, though, is the theme from Doctor Who played in the style of Belgian jazz!

I loved the show when it was on the TV in May this year, and the DVD contains almost double the material that the show did, up from one hour to 1hr 49min. If you’re a fan of Bill Bailey’s unique (and slightly manic) style of comedy, or of musical comedy in general, this would make a perfect Christmas gift. If you’re not quite sure, why not check out the trailer?

Bill Bailey’s Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra is available from Amazon.co.uk (released 23 Nov)

Disclosure: If you buy the DVD from Amazon, I will earn a small commission on the sale.
