One to watch: McLarenFans.org

McLarenFans.org

I wrote on Monday about how TVCatchup had enabled me to keep up with the Formula 1 qualifying while on the move, and today I want to draw your attention to a Formula 1 related site run by Dan Nash. Dan has previously written about the principles of Twetiquette and is a great guy to connect with.

The full backstory to the site can be found here, but suffice to say that Dan is an avid McLaren fan and was disappointed with their social media presence. He wrote an open letter to McLaren about this, and even got a response, but after seeing little or no improvement in their Internet offerings he decided to start McLarenFans.org.

Why do we care?

Not everyone is into F1, I know that, but I’m featuring Dan’s site for a couple of reasons. Aside from helping to get the word out about it, I think this will be a very interesting site to watch and see how it grows in the coming months and years. McLarenFans.org is a product of one man’s passion for a sporting team, fulfils a need for McLaren fans to have a place where they can find all the latest news about the team during a race weekend, and chip in on the conversation themselves. It is, by definition, very tightly focused which is something many bloggers would say will be to its advantage.

As a starting point… the site launched at the weekend, and on Sunday had 27 visitors, while the McLarenFans twitter account had 30 followers. Dan and I will be updating you regularly on traffic levels and any income the site earns, so watch this space. And, if F1 and McLaren are your thing, head on over, check the site out, and add it to your feed reader!

Thanks for sharing this Chris. Interesting that McLaren aren’t taking their social media presence seriously – I would have expected them to be at the cutting edge. Mind you, this year’s car was a dog, so maybe they’ve lost the edge? I’ll head over and have a look at the new site.

Maybe they’ve been too busy working on the car, and their new supercar, to spend much time on Twitter :)

It’s interesting to note that the adense ads on this post are the most targetted I’ve ever had… all about F1 or motorsport. They’re normally a bit more vague than that! I think Dan’s chosen a good topic for a blog and I’m looking forward to seeing how the site goes.

D’oh – having just commented on the adsense ads, now one’s come up for Littlewoods! :)

That’s interesting Chris…. you might just have persuaded me to put Adsense on the post pages of McLarenFans.org………………………….

I should also say thanks for a brilliant article! Even I’m excited to go and have a look at the site now :)
