For all that I like storing files on the Internet, I hate having to play around with FTP or web-interfaces every time I want to do something with them. So I was pleasantly surprised to find that you can connect to Box.net as a network drive without any additional software if you’re using a Mac.
Here’s what to do:
- Open Finder and then select Go > Connect to Server
- In the dialog that opens up, enter the server address: http://www.box.net/dav and hit “Connect”
- A dialog will come up in a minute or so asking for your Box.net username and password. Use the e-mail address and password you provided when you registered for Box.net.
- Confirm your way out of that dialog, and a new network drive will appear in Finder called “dav”
- Voila – that’s your Box.net filespace… enjoy :)
There seems to be a bug in that files with spaces in their names don’t show up properly (they are correctly uploaded, but don’t show up on the network drive… only on the website). As far as I know, this method of access is unsupported, so it’s unlikely that this will be fixed! Still, I got around it by replacing spaces with underscores.
